Young artists win billboard competition

Talented pupils will see their artwork displayed on billboards after winning a competition to encourage residents across the borough to recycle.

Primary school-aged children were invited by Barrow Borough Council to design a poster to help highlight how people can recycle well to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The two winning entries will be displayed on billboards at the Barrow Raiders rugby ground Craven Park, Barrow, until the end of March. Two runners up will also have their entries displayed on banners.

The Mayor of Barrow, Councillor Hayley Preston, said: “We had some wonderful entries for this competition. The children of Barrow are clearly very green, fantastically artistic, and the knowledge and enthusiasm they show for keeping our borough clean is great to see. It holds us in good stead for the future.

“It’s important that we all do our bit to keep our beautiful borough clean and green. We hope these amazing posters will serve as a reminder that we can all make a positive change, not only for the area in which we live, but also for nature and a healthy planet, by recycling the correct items everyday.”

The winners are Willow, Year 2, and Hollie, Year 2, from Ireleth St Peters C of E School. The runners up are Ellis, Year 4, and Rose, Year 3, from Ireleth St Peters C of E School.

Rachael McFarlane, Headteacher of Ireleth St Peter’s C of E Primary School, said: “Our pupils were keen to take part in the competition and put a lot of hard work and effort into their posters.

“They are all aware of why it’s important to recycle so that we can look after our borough and the planet. We’re delighted to see them do so well.”

handy guide to recycling is available on Barrow Borough Council’s website. It explains which items form part of the borough’s kerbside recycling collection service and which items should be placed in the waste bin.
