A new Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Westmorland and Furness Council were appointed at the council’s inaugural meeting today (Thursday 20 April).
The meeting which took place at County Offices in Kendal saw Councillor Matt Severn, Liberal Democrat member for Kendal Highgate, elected as the new, and first, Chairman of the new council.
Councillor Ali Jama, Liberal Democrat member for Upper Kent, has been elected as the new Deputy Chairman and will support Councillor Severn in the civic year ahead.
On 1 April 2023, the new unitary authority took responsibility for all council services previously provided by Barrow Borough Council, Eden District Council, South Lakeland District Council and Cumbria County Council.
Prior to this, the Council operated as a shadow authority, responsible for the planning, preparation and decision-making required to set up the new council.
Councillor Matt Severn, Chairman of Westmorland and Furness Council, speaking on his appointment, said:
“I am both deeply honoured and humbled to be the first Chair of the new Council and I look forward to representing all of the different, wonderful, communities and people of Westmorland and Furness in the civic year ahead.
“This role is important in raising the profile of both the new Council and its vital work; as well as the traditions, events and people that make Westmorland and Furness what it is.
“I can’t wait to get stuck in supporting councillors and residents!”
