A NUMBER of changes to Barrow Borough Council services have been confirmed for the Public Bank Holiday of Monday, September 19 – the day of the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Barrow Borough Council buildings will be closed, in line with Bank Holiday procedures, with the exception of cemeteries.

The council’s homelessness team will remain on standby to ensure urgent support is in place for anyone in need.

Garden waste collections will still go ahead for those who would normally receive one, as will a limited street cleansing service.

The Forum and The Dock Museum will be closed for the day, as will Barrow Leisure Centre, which is operated by Barrow Forward on behalf of Barrow Borough Council.

Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, said: “Monday has been declared a Bank Holiday as the nation, along with people around the world, mourn the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

“While there will be some changes in place for the day to allow the council’s own staff to pay their respects, a number of council teams and members of staff will continue to work to keep essential services running and my thanks go to them.

“My thanks also go to the hundreds of people who attended the official Proclamation of King Charles III, our new Monarch, outside Barrow Town Hall on Sunday, and to all those involved in organising such an important and historic event.”

A National Moment of Reflection will be observed across the nation at 8pm on Sunday, September 18, in tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, with a minute’s silence.

Flag Protocol

The Union Flag remains at half mast during the period of national mourning. It was raised for 24 hours from Saturday, September 10 to Sunday, September 11, in line with Royal protocols, for the Official Proclamation of King Charles III.

Floral Tributes

Floral tributes can be left at The Cenotaph, in Barrow Park, though cellophane or paper wrapping should be removed if possible. These tributes will be removed from Tuesday, September 20 in line with official advice, and will be composted over the coming months. In time, this compost will be used to nurture memorial trees planted in tribute to Queen Elizabeth. Cards and written tributes will be collected and archived.
