Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (PFCC), Peter McCall, is urging drivers to stay aware on Cumbria’s roads this Easter weekend.
The county’s roads will see an influx in traffic this weekend, making drivers more susceptible to accidents. Many of Cumbria’s roads are rural and narrow, often being only one lane wide, and can become congested in busy periods such as Easter and school holidays.
The four biggest killers nationally, known as the ‘Fatal Four’ are speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, distracted driving e.g., using a mobile phone, and drink/drug driving. However, the biggest cause of minor accidents is not paying attention to the road, especially at junctions.
Speaking on safe driving, PFCC Peter McCall, said: “We are very lucky to live in one of the most beautiful parts of the country that attracts visitors from all over the world.
“However, many of our roads were built long before cars and are often narrow, winding, and single-tracked which can be quite dangerous for those who are not used to them.
“Tourists and residents alike will be out over Easter weekend enjoying the Lakes; therefore, I must urge all drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, stick to the speed limits, drive to the road conditions and be considerate of all other road users.
“Cyclists and walkers are also on our roads as there often isn’t pavements in our more rural areas, so we all need to be wary to provide them with space and only over-take when it is safe to do so.
“It’s so important that we look out for one another – together we can make Cumbria a safer place to live, visit and drive in.”
Inspector Alistair McCaig, Cumbria Constabulary, said: “The Easter period is a busy one for Cumbria’s road network with many visitors to our county.
“Weather conditions are easing and we have more hours of daylight, which can result in more motorcyclists and cyclists on our roads.
“We would ask that all road users are mindful of each other, allowing for suitable space in order to safely go about your journey. If you’re out on your motorcycle, please ensure that you ride to your capabilities when taking advantage of the better weather.
“We ask that motorists ensure that they do everything they can to prevent incidents and collisions.
“The majority of road traffic collisions are avoidable and are a result of driver behaviour. Please drive within the speed limits set on our county’s roads, doing so protects you and other road users.”
