Celebrating new apprenticeship opportunities in Cumbria

As Cumbria embarks on a new journey for local government, this is an exciting time to start a new career with Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumberland Council or Cumbria Commissioner Fire and Rescue Authority through the fantastic apprenticeship scheme.
Over 50 new apprenticeship opportunities are now available in a variety of different roles, such as Civil Engineering, Highways Maintenance, Customer Service, Business Admin, and many more! There’s something for everyone, from Level 2 to Degree Level.
The application window is now open and closes at midnight on Sunday 26 March 2023.
The award-winning Apprenticeship Team are on hand to answer questions from anyone interested in starting an apprenticeship, or parents and carers. Contact the Apprenticeship Team on 01228 221400, email apprentice@cumbria.gov.uk or go to cumbria.gov.uk/apprentice.
Councillor Sue Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning, said:
“Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity for people to earn while they learn and many of our apprentices go on to secure permanent employment and further training.
“We have a vast range of opportunities available. Whether you’re leaving school and looking to start a new career or already in employment and looking to gain a degree equivalent qualification – we have something to suit everyone.”
This is what previous apprentice recruits had to say.
Jack Gosling, Advanced Apprentice – Civil Engineering Technician, said;
“I started my Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship with Cumbria County Council in September 2021. Since then, I’ve worked in a variety of different teams getting a range of experience; from traffic management to road re-surfacing to bridge inspections, to name but a few.
“Choosing the apprenticeship route to start my career definitely worked for me. My colleagues have always made me feel very welcome and supported. I’m now progressing in my civil engineering career, and I feel that this is just the start.”
Emily Kean, Advanced Apprentice – Business & Administration, said;
“I started my Advanced Business Administration Apprenticeship in 2021 after deciding university wasn’t for me, and it was the best choice I could have made! I love my job and have really enjoyed working as part of a team. It was great to be earning from the outset, not having to worry about student loans was a bonus too. The invaluable skills and experience I have gained will help me to continue to progress in my career.”
Jamie Healey, Advanced Apprentice – Civil Engineering Technician, said;
“Choosing to join Cumbia County Council through the apprenticeship scheme was a great choice for me. I began my Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship in September 2021 and, just a year or so into my three-year course, I secured a permanent post role. The help and guidance I received from colleagues, mentors, and the Apprenticeship Team has helped to build my confidence so I can continue to progress in my career.”
