Barrow – highlighting the vital work of your neighbourhood officers

Our neighbourhood policing teams work throughout the year to support the communities they serve by tackling the issues and concerns that matter to those communities.

This week we are highlighting the work they do as part of neighbourhood policing week of action (23 – 27 January)
Crime and anti-social behaviour can have a detrimental and lasting impact on not only those directly affected, but also the wider community. Our officers and PCSOs work tirelessly with communities and partner agencies to ensure residents and businesses receive the best possible local policing service.
In Barrow the neighbourhood policing team are continuing to tackle anti-social behaviour (ASB) across Barrow with hotspots identified in Walney – Mill Lane, Combe House and St Mary’s Vickerstown Park. Issues have also been identified in Askam following reports of young people throwing items and windows and kicking doors.
We are aware this is under reported to us, especially within Askam and would encourage people to report incidents to us so we can address them with our partners.
We take a multiagency approach to tackle local issues and work with our partners from the council and community groups to engage with young people as well as early intervention in schools to prevent criminal behaviour.
As a result of incidents at Combe House which is a derelict building that has been targeted by young people causing ASB and fires.
The issue was referred into the Barrow Local Focus Hub where partner agencies will discuss the issues and what can be done to prevent more incidents, as a result the following actions were taken:

  • Section 29 notice was served on the developers
  • A StreetSafe was carried out in the area
  • Inputs around ASB were carried out in schools
  • A previous press release was done
  • CCTV and signage

Since this work has been put in place Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Cumbria Police have had no further calls to service to this location, however we are still carrying out patrols and monitoring the area.
If members of the public have information relating to criminal damage or antisocial behaviour in this area, they are asked to contact police via www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it. You can also call 101.
During the week officers from the neighbourhood policing team will be carrying out several activities to target issues identified. There will be dedicated patrols carried across the week to target anti-social behaviour with support from the Child Centred Policing teams, and our partner agencies
During the week officers from the neighbourhood policing team will be

Inspector Gareth Jesson, Barrow Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We continue to carry out work with our partners to tackle the local issues impacting our communities.
“Anti-social behaviour can have a detrimental impact on individuals and the community, we have a number of tools we use to tackle this behaviour and early intervention through schools to prevent young people from being involved in criminality is essential.
“We continue to ask you report issues you are facing within the community so we can continue to address them.”
Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, said: “We all want to live in safer and more respectful communities, which is why the work of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) is so important.  We have been investing additional officers into neighbourhood teams and we are all committed to seeing them have real effect.

“The NPTs listen to public concerns and do everything within their ability to combat these local issues to help create a safer place for people to live in, work and visit.
“Weeks of action such as Neighbourhood Policing Week provide us with the opportunity to showcase key examples of what the Police do year-round from tackling crime to educating and engaging with residents.
“Neighbourhood policing relies on the partnership with the public, we can really help the police to help us.  Most importantly we can all be eyes and ears; the police depend on information.  I encourage everyone to report anything suspicious or illegal to the Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.  Every report helps to target resource and solve problems together we can and will keep our neighbourhoods safe and crime free.“
