Barrow’s bold vision to be the next UK destination for creativity needs your help

Barra Culture, a once-in-a-generation creative programme for Barrow, made up of people and organisations who all love Barrow and love what it means to live, work and create in the area, are looking for people to help them make creative things happen – 20 enthusiastic Barrovians to form the Barra Culture Advisory Group.
The Barrow cultural programme had been operating for just 12 months before COVID struck – leaving families, communities and the arts all facing tough challenges. Undeterred and understanding just how art and creativity can support communities, Barra Culture has been offering a glimmer of hope throughout lockdowns, holding writing workshops, children’s activities and singing sessions online.
Daniel Tyler-Mctighe, who joined Barra Culture as its new Director just a couple of months ago said:

“COVID has set us challenges – but it’s also given us opportunities to reach people who may previously not have had the time to ‘engage in culture’ or who have enjoyed our online events and now want to know more about are future plans – or may even want to help shape what we do in the future.”

“It’s a great time to join us as an Advisor and help us to decide what kind of creative stuff we should be doing, and crucially, to ensure that the opinions, interests and needs of everyone in Barrow are considered – to feel pride in what we can all achieve together and share our plans with friends, family and the neighbours.”

Barra Culture would like to hear from anyone who lives in the Barrow borough, especially Barrow Island, Central, Hindpool, Ormsgill, Risedale and Walney North; people who work in a Barrow business, charity or organisation and also from creative people – anyone doing creative things as an individual or as part of a bigger group.

“Being from Barrow is the only qualification you need – you don’t have to have done anything like this before – in fact, “it would be good if you haven’t”, said Daniel.

Barra Culture Advisors will be consulted on the development of Barra Culture throughout the year, meet all together (hopefully in person) once every 3 months from May 2021 to February 2022 and be invited to sit on smaller decision-making panels for different areas of the programme.

A small contribution is paid towards Advisors’ time and expenses for each meeting attended and towards any specific access needs.

Barra Culture would love to hear from enthusiastic Barrovians who feel they can help to bring to fruition the plan for Barrow to be the next cultural destination on the map! Exactly how that will look is completely up to them!
Application is by a simple form www.barraculture.org.uk/ , to be returned by 4pm on Wednesday 31 March 2021.
If you have any questions message them on Facebook, call or text Becky on 07871 602405 or email info@barraculture.org.uk.
