More good news for council’s Dock Museum

Westmorland and Furness Council’s Dock Museum has been awarded the title of ‘Highly Recommended Attraction 2023’ by Going Places UK.

Following a recent score rating of 89% and two award nominations in the Hidden Gem and Welcome categories by Visit England, the Dock Museum has since also been recognised by Going Places UK for providing an excellent experience, as voted for by visitors.

Going Places UK awards attractions and businesses special recognition for those who provide an excellent experience, whether it be for quality attraction, an overall experience, friendliness of welcome, cleanliness, attention to detail and children’s facilities.

The Dock Museum is built over a 19th century dry dock in a channel-side location and boasts galleries exploring the history of the people and industries of the Barrow-in-Furness area, changing exhibitions, a gift shop and a café.

The museum also has a large outdoor sea themed playground with space for picnics and displays the Herbert Leigh life boat – the longest serving lifeboat at the Barrow RNLI station from 1951-1982.

Councillor Virginia Taylor, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Communities and Localities, said:

“Congratulations to all the team once ag

ain! As a council we are proud to have such a great bunch of people amongst us and this latest award is all the more special as it’s voted for by visitors. It further represents well-deserved public and industry recognition of all the team do – dedication to creating the best customer experience and showcasing this fantastic museum.

“For anyone who hasn’t visited The Dock Museum before I encourage you to take a trip. It’s a place where Barrow’s shipbuilding history comes to life and has facilities for all including a great playground, café, and free onsite parking. Plus, with miles of sandy beaches, nature reserves, birding spots and seal-watching, as well as Furness Abbey – there’s plenty of other things you can also do and see while visiting the area.”

Admission to the museum is free. Visit the Dock Museum website for more information.
