Simon Fell, the local Member of Parliament for Barrow & Furness, has today launched a petition to support Ulverston Library.

Ulverston Library closed almost two months ago after an electrical fault was found. Further surveys have identified further issues and the library remains closed.

Westmorland & Furness Council are currently ‘considering their options’ regarding its future.

A library stand has since began in the Market, and now the Coro is offering a pop-up service that is planned to grow. The library team are doing an amazing job under difficult circumstances.

These offers are welcome as a temporary measure. But I want to see a full library service return to Ulverston as soon as is possible.

Speaking from Westminster, local MP Simon Fell said:

“Ulverston Library is a fantastic place. Quite aside from lending books, it is a valuable social hub, and offers valuable services to the community – whether that’s rhyme time, reading groups, talks by authors, or just access to the internet and a photocopier.

“While the temporary services at the Market and the Coro are welcome, they are no substitute for a full library service and I want to make sure that the Council understands just how much the community wants to see its library back as soon as possible.

“I’ve asked local residents to share their personal stories about why the library matters to them, and I will be raising a parliamentary petition to demonstrate the strength of feeling too.”
