Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, is urging motorists to take extra care when driving in the county during the summer holidays.

Cumbria is a popular tourist destination year-round but sees a rise in visitors during the summer months. With the county being mostly rural, especially around the Lakes, motorists and pedestrians are at risk of being involved in an accident if they aren’t following road laws and being considerate of other road users.

Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall, said: “Schools across the UK are now on break for summer which means an influx in tourists for Cumbria.

“Our roads will be busier than usual which means that we all need to more observant when out driving or as a pedestrian.

“Many of our roads in the county are narrow, winding and, in rural areas, have no road markings or pavements for walkers, which can be a new experience for drivers from outside the county and the UK.

“If you are out and about enjoying the Lake District, please be patient and respect the rules of the road, including speed limits, rights of way, and parking regulations.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to be safe and keep each other safe.

“We all want everyone to enjoy their holidays, so please drive safe and get home safely.”
