Six more water dispensers installed across Northern network

Thirsty customers in the north west can now refill their water bottles across some of Northern’s busiest stations and cut down on plastic waste.

A total of six water dispensers are set to be installed – with most now complete and ready to use at Guide Bridge, Ashton-under-Lyne, Greenfield, Mossley, Windermere and Levenshulme stations.

A further 32 were installed last year across the Northern network after a successful trial at Bolton and Castleford stations and 19 more are planned this year.

Each water dispenser has a hands-free sensor and will provide free chilled water.

Customers will be able to see how many times reusable bottles have been refilled thanks to a digital counter.

Mark Powles, customer and commercial director, said: “Our customers are at the heart of everything we do, and this is a benefit for them and the environment.

“We want to provide our customers with unlimited free water refills and help them to stay hydrated, cut down on plastic pollution and save money – as well as make sure our station are welcoming places for everyone.”

The train operator is working with key suppliers to reduce carbon emissions from the businesses supply chain as well as become efficient with its resources such as water, energy and fuel.

Northern is the second largest train operator in the UK, with 2,500 services a day to more than 500 stations across the North of England.

The locations of water dispensers installed last year are: Alnmouth, Bingley, Blackburn, Bolton, Blackpool North, Bradford Forster Square, Bradford Interchange, Castleford, Cheadle Hulme, Glossop, Guiseley, Halifax, Harrogate, Hazel Grove, Heaton Chapel, Hebden Bridge, Hexham, Horsforth, Ilkley, Keighley, Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Victoria, Meadowhall, Mexborough, New Pudsey, Newton Le Willows, Rochdale, Salford Central, Salford Crescent, Shipley, Skipton, Warrington Central, Wigan Wallgate and Wilmslow stations.
