Residents invited to Furness Climate Change Citizens’ Jury event

MEMBERS of the public are invited to hear a set of recommendations on how people, businesses and organisations across Barrow and Furness can take action to tackle climate change.

The recommendations were formed by the Furness Climate Change Citizens’ Jury which heard from a series of experts over the course of ten weeks who explained climate change and it’s effect on the Furness area and helped the jurors understand possible options to address the climate emergency.

Now, the recommendations are set to be revealed at a special launch event – on Tuesday, March 29 – with residents invited to attend to find out more.

The event will be held online with members of the public able to register their interest here:…/launch-of-the-furness…

Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, said: “The process of creating and bringing together a Citizens’ Jury to look into the issue of climate change has been excellent and an experience I’ll never forget.

“The jury included people from all backgrounds thinking about the causes and solutions to climate change.

“I encourage our residents to attend the event to hear more about the recommendations that have been made.

“This is a vital opportunity for us to make a difference and make the planet a greener and cleaner place for both ourselves and future generations.”

The process was delivered by Shared Future – which has organised and led citizens’ assemblies and juries in other areas of the UK.

The jury were asked to consider the question ‘What should happen in the Furness area to address the emergency of climate change?”

Members have now agreed a list of more than 30 recommendations for the future.

These include; a review of recycling in the borough, better facilities and support for residents to encourage them to recycle, the creation of more green spaces, investment in cycling infrastructure and cycle paths, increased public transport services and an easier process for the installation of solar panels.

The jury was supported throughout the process by an oversight panel, made up of a range of local stakeholders including BAE Systems Ltd, Extinction Rebellion and Cando FM.
