Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a £200 million investment in the town

During his visit to Barrow-in-Furness, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a £200 million investment in the town over the next decade, hailing a “nuclear renaissance” for the area. The funding will support the nuclear industry and its skilled workforce, which plays a crucial role in both the UK’s national security and energy security.

The Prime Minister praised the work of BAE Systems Submarines and its employees, describing their contribution as “mission critical” for the country. He expressed his determination to secure a “really bright future” for Barrow, with the investment aimed at creating thousands of apprenticeships, graduate schemes, and PhDs to bolster the nuclear skills base. Additionally, the funding will address infrastructure, transport, health, and community support initiatives in the town.

Steve Timms, the Managing Director of BAE Systems Submarines, welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement, acknowledging the company’s integral role in delivering the UK’s defence requirements for over 150 years. He expressed enthusiasm about capitalizing on this “once-in-a-generation opportunity” and working with local and central government partners to enhance Barrow as a place to live and work.
