People urged to take the plunge with a temporary market stall this Christmas

BUDDING entrepreneurs, makers, crafters or those who simply want to try out a brand new venture are being urged to take the plunge with a temporary market stall this Christmas.

Barrow’s Market Hall is set to open six days a week during the run up to December 25 to ensure shoppers can support local businesses.

The market, in Duke Street, is usually open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

But a surge in demand during the festive season means it will open from Monday to Saturday through December until Christmas – as well as on Sunday, December 18.

Now, for the first time ever, special six week market licenses will also be available to allow people to try out a stall in Barrow’s Market Hall.

Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, said: “We know the market has very loyal customers and more and more people are visiting for the first time in search of excellent value and the ability to shop local.

“Taking a stall temporarily is a wonderful opportunity for people who perhaps already run a home or online-based business or for someone who has always wanted to try their hand at something new.

“Visiting the market is also a wonderful way to support local businesses and we hope more people take advantage of the extended opening days.”

Barrow Market is one of the largest indoor markets in Cumbria and is home to a range of stalls and businesses. It celebrated its 50th year of opening in its current location in 2021.

Through December, it will be open during the following hours:

Monday 9am – 5pm

Tuesday – 9am – 4pm

Wednesday – 9am – 5pm

Thursday – 9am – 4pm

Friday – 9am – 5pm

Saturday – 9am – 5pm

plus

Sunday, December 18 – 10am – 4pm

Anyone interested in a temporary license, which will allow people to trade from a stall in the market for six weeks, should email: regen@barrowbc.gov.uk

Councillor Thomson added: “There’s a great atmosphere in the market and the chance to explore, meet traders and small business owners face to face and enjoy excellent value for money.

“There’s lots happening in the market and the town centre through December. This festive season is shaping up to be one of the best yet.”
