Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Peter McCall urges people experiencing domestic and sexual abuse to come forward as specialist support services are available and can be accessed directly, as well as through the Police, over the Christmas period.
PCC, Peter McCall comments: “Domestic abuse is a horrendous crime and it is a sad fact, that during the festive period, domestic abuse related crimes increase.
“Over Christmas, when many businesses are closed and families are together for a sustained period of time, victims of domestic abuse can feel isolated and vulnerable. This is why we need to raise awareness of the specialist support services available.
“No one should feel that they are alone, help is out there and support services can be accessed 24/7, over Christmas and the New Year period.
“I would like to take this opportunity to encourage any victim of domestic or sexual abuse to report it to police. We understand it is difficult, but the police are here to help. Your report will be taken seriously, appropriately investigated and we will work hard to bring offenders to justice.
“If you are experiencing abuse yourself or are concerned about someone you know, please do not suffer in silence, help is out there.”
Detective Chief Inspector James Yallop, Cumbria Constabulary, said: “Throughout the festive period, our officers and staff will be on hand to respond to reports of domestic abuse.
“We work closely with our partner agencies to ensure that tailored support is provided to victims and to those affected. We understand that some victims may not be confident in reporting what they are suffering, however I can assure you that trained professionals are ready to work with you and ensure your safety.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to appeal to potential offenders to stop and think about the harm they are causing to a family member, loved one or ex-partner.
“This type of abuse and offending will never be tolerated and offenders must realise it is their responsibility – there are no excuses.”
