Millom robber jailed for over three years

A Millom man who robbed a Post Office and a Tesco has been jailed for three years one month.

Paul Czernozekow, 41, of King Street, Millom, was sentenced after previously admitting offences of armed robbery, possession of a bladed article (a hammer) and burglary other than a dwelling.

The court heard how Czernozekow had walked into Haverigg Post Office on a Thursday (26 May, 2022), armed with a hammer.

Czernozekow began smashing at the plexiglass separating the staff from customers whilst demanding money, telling staff: “Give me all your money.”

The plexiglass was struck between 10 and 20 times before shattering.

He then fled with around £380.

The following month (12th June, 2022), Czernozekow entered the Tesco store in Millom after causing damage to the fire door to gain access. It was around 3am and the store was closed to the public.

Czernozekow was then spooked by an alarm and fled – but not before ripping an electric tablet from a wall.

Czernozekow was subsequently arrested and in interview gave no comment responses to all questions asked.

However, he admitted the offences in court.

Detective Constable Olivia Foster said: “Czernozekow’s use of a hammer at the Post Office would undoubtedly been a terrifying experience for those at work that day, who should not have to fear such an incident whilst going about their day.

“Whilst Czernozekow refused to answer questions in interview, officers were able to prove beyond doubt that he had been the man behind both offences, resulting in guilty pleas at court.

“I would like to thank those who gave statements in support of the police investigation for their courage in coming forward. That courage has resulted in the offender facing justice today.”
