Man sentenced to over 6 years in jail following stop on M6

A man from Liverpool has been jailed for 6 years and 8 months for drug supply offences.

Gary Long, 35, of Liverpool, pleaded guilty and was sentenced today at Carlisle Crown court for possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class A – Cocaine.

The court heard how on 23 March 2023, officers observed Long’s vehicle driving needlessly in the middle lane travelling northbound on the M6 between junctions 39 and 40.

Officers then ran some checks and made a decision to conduct a stop check on the vehicle.

When officers entered the vehicle there was a strong smell of cannabis and Long was detained for a Misuse of Drugs act search, along with his vehicle.

During a search of the vehicle two large blocks wrapped in brown tape were found concealed within a seat and Long was arrested.

Upon a further search, another block was uncovered in another seat.

The three packages weighed over 3kg in total and were found to be cocaine with an approximate value of £250,000.

The seizure and investigation forms part of Operation Alliance – Cumbria Constabulary’s ongoing response to protect the county against serious and organised crime.

Detective Constable Rob Dixon said: “Long was found with a significant quantity of drugs.

“Today’s result shows the consequences that face those who travel into the county with the intent to supply drugs.

“We will continue to take robust action to target organised criminality in Cumbria and will pursue those involved at every level”.
