Westmorland and Furness Council Library Service is hosting a variety of fantastic events over the coming weeks.

The Summer Reading Challenge continues to play an important part in the event schedule. It’s not too late to sign up to the challenge, though you don’t need to have entered to join in on the fun! There are a range of activities taking place throughout our libraries, aimed at different age groups. All these events are totally free! Below is a taster of the other library events that are taking place over the coming weeks:

Beginners’ chess tournament – Barrow Library, Friday 18 August from 1pm. No booking is required, just show up on the day for a fun and friendly game!
Free Yoga and Storytime – Penrith Library, Monday 21 August at 10.30am and 11.30am. Come rain or shine we will be having a good time! Instructor Ilona will lead the sessions which combine easy Yoga poses and a children’s picture book. Book through Eventbrite or call Penrith Library on 01768 812100.
Meet Sarah Neill Marine Biologist – Grange Library, 30 August from 6pm to 7.30pm. Sarah is a Marine Biologist and Marine Mammal Medic. Hear about Sarah’s work around the world with ‘British Divers Marine Life Rescue’ and the animal care and teaching centre at Kendal College. This event is suitable for adults and families with children aged 8+. Tickets are free for under 18s and £2 for adults. Book through Eventbrite.
Children’s author talk – ‘A cat’s guide to the night sky’ with Stuart Atkinson – Kendal Library, 9 September from 2pm – 3pm. Chat to author and amateur astronomer Stuart about the night sky, the universe and how a starry-eyed rescue cat inspired his globally selling book. Children can bring their own cuddly toy cats along to join in the fun! Tickets are free (donation option available). Aimed at Primary age children. Book through Eventbrite.
Wordsworth Grasmere Free Family Workshops – Children and their parents/carers are invited to join one of the Wordsworth Grasmere Free Family Workshops. Workshops include different sessions aimed at different age ranges. Come along to discover how tourism and travel has changed over the past 200 years, explore the difference William Wordsworth made, and learn about the underwater life in our lakes through craft and poetry. All dates, times and locations are available on Eventbrite.
Murder Mystery nights – Get involved in the fun and work together to solve the mystery! Hosted by Highly Suspect, one of the UK’s leading Murder Mystery Event Companies. Events start at 7pm. Tickets are £9 per adult and £5 per child. Suitable for children aged 8+ as part of a team accompanied by adults. Series of events to be hosted at Barrow, Penrith, and Kendal Libraries.
