Grange-over-Sands flood alleviation work has begun

Cumbria County Council are updating residents, businesses, and visitors that flood alleviation work has begun in Grange-over-Sands this month.

Cumbria County Council, as Lead Local Flood Authority has been working with other Risk Management Authorities to reduce the risk of flooding to properties in the Windermere Road and Lindale Road area of Grange-over-Sands.

The area has an extensive flood history, dating back to the early 1900’s. More recently, flood events are estimated to have occurred almost every year for the past 30 years – any persistent heavy rainfall causes flooding issues in the local area.

The new works will provide a pumping station to take away the excess water that cannot be discharged through the existing culvert under the land where the Spar supermarket is. In addition to the pumping station, the old culvert under the Spar will also be replaced prior to the construction of the new Spar supermarket. The installation of the discharge pipes from the pumping station will cause some minor disruption on Lindale Road, which will be controlled by a traffic management system.

Windermere car park will be closed until approximately the end of July 2023, and visitors will need to use on street parking, which the council realise is not always ideal and apologises for any inconvenience this will cause.

Construction works will be carried out, Monday to Friday from 7.00am – 6.00pm and on the occasional Saturday from 8.00am – 1.00pm.

The completed project will contribute towards the reduction of flood risk to the properties in Windermere Road.

Construction works will be completed by local contractor Cubby Construction Ltd, on behalf of Cumbria County Council.

If residents or businesses in the area have any questions, they are advised to liaise with the site staff or contact the Highways Hotline at 0300 303 2992.

Cumbria County Council would like to thank the community for their continued support and patience while these flood alleviation improvements are made and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said:

“I am pleased that these important works are happening in Grange-over- Sands, as this area is renowned for flooding.

“The council’s investment, alongside partners, into flood alleviation projects is essential to provide the best protection for our communities, and to avoid the devastation that flooding can bring to people’s lives, their homes and their families.

“I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and support whilst these works are scheduled, our contractor Cubby, and all involved in the various projects around Cumbria to ensure communities are confident in having the best protection against flood-risk possible.”
