Flood alleviation work throughout the county

Aldingham, South Lakeland
We have successfully completed works in Aldingham, and invested £220,00 in the flood allevation, which consisted of the design and construction of upgraded drainage infrastructure, approximately 140m in length, including a new above ground outflow pipe, discharging into Morecambe Bay. The infrastructure will provide a new route of conveyance from the known localised flood hotspot, enabling water present in the area to be dispersed into the sea efficiently, whilst removing the number of blockages at the outfall.
Construction works were completed in November 2022 by local contractor Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd, on behalf of Cumbria County Council.
North Road, Holme
Flood alleviation project on North Road, Holme (near Kendal) has resumed, which started on 20 February and will continue for approximately 16 weeks. Work continues with the implementation of a new drainage system from Hillside to North Road.
There will be some disruptions while we make it safer for the communities. which we we apologise for.
Grange-over-Sands
Flood alleviation works are taking place in Grange-over-Sands – the area has an extensive flood history, dating back to the early 1900’s. More recently, flood events are estimated to have occurred almost every year for the past 30 years – any persistent heavy rainfall causes flooding issues in the local area.
The new works will provide a pumping station to take away the excess water that cannot be discharged through the existing culvert under the land where the Spar supermarket is. In addition to the pumping station, the old culvert under the Spar will also be replaced prior to the construction of the new Spar supermarket. The installation of the discharge pipes from the pumping station will cause some minor disruption on Lindale Road, which will be controlled by a traffic management system.
Windermere car park will be closed until approximately the end of July 2023, and visitors will need to use on street parking, which we realise is not always ideal and apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.
If residents or businesses in the either Holme or Grange-over-Sands have any questions, please either liaise with the site staff or contact the Highways Hotline at 0300 303 2992.
Flimby
We are investing £1.5 million to help to alleviate flooding in Flimby, which will consist of improving drainage in areas around the village.
Work is currently being planned to commence mid to the end of April and more information will be issued this month.
Thank you for your patience and support while we make the communities more resilient.
