Dementia Action Week in Eden: a range of events taking place

Dementia Action Week takes place this year from Monday 15 May to Sunday 21 May, with a range of activities planned in Eden to mark the week.

The newly-formed Eden Dementia Friendly Communities Partnership is joining forces with the Alzheimer’s Society, to encourage people to take action and seek help for memory loss.

A range of activities and initiatives are coming to Eden during Dementia Action Week 2023, which takes place from Monday 15 May to Sunday 21 May 2023.

It’s not called getting old, it’s called getting ill. Many misconceptions about memory loss and ageing prevent people from recognising the early signs and symptoms of dementia. Throughout Dementia Action Week, Maria Day, the Dementia Adviser in Eden for the Alzheimer’s Society, will be available in Penrith to provide information and answer questions. You can find an information stand at Morrison’s from Monday to Thursday, as well as at Penrith Library from Monday to Saturday.

Maria will also be leading a ‘Singing for the Brain’ session at Penrith Methodist Church on Wednesday 17 May, from 2pm to 3.30pm. You can book a place by contacting the Dementia Adviser Service on 01228 819299 or by emailing cumbria@alzheimer’s.org.uk.

Other special events for people with dementia and their carers will also be taking place in Penrith during Dementia Action Week. Activities at Penrith Library on Monday 15 May from 1.30 – 4pm include making bunting, trips down memory lane on a VR headset, and exploring memory bags and boxes. The Salvation Army is also hosting an afternoon of creativity, live music, singing and reminiscing on Wednesday 17 May from 1.30 – 3pm. A two-course lunch is available beforehand for £5 by booking on 01768 866732.

The Eden Dementia Friendly Communities Partnership brings together local charities, community and faith groups, health and emergency services, local councils, and businesses. Its mission is to foster a dementia-friendly environment by raising awareness of risk factors, prevention strategies, early signs of dementia, as well as providing information on local support, services and activities for individuals with dementia and their carers.

Stay tuned for an upcoming launch event in Penrith this summer, featuring information stalls, talks, and engaging activities. For details about the launch event or to express interest in organising a dementia information event in your community, email Eden.AreaSupport@westmorlandandfurness.gov.uk.
