Community helps to shape transport scheme for Millom

The latest plans for a scheme to improve ways to move around Millom and Haverigg sustainably have been shared with the community.

Residents, business owners, those involved in local organisations and other community members attended engagement events to view updated designs for Connecting Millom and Haverigg.

The project is one of four that make up Millom Town Deal which secured £20.6 million from the Government’s Towns Fund in November 2022 with an additional £8.7 million in match funding to help the town and its communities to thrive in the future.

David Savage, Chair of Millom Town Deal Board, said:

“Seeing so many residents turn out and once again take the opportunity to comment on the new proposed changes, demonstrates the value of holding these events. We took onboard feedback from the engagement event in June 23, and this led to several key changes.

“We of course will commit to making any further appropriate changes to the design plans based on the feedback from this event as we now move onto the final stage of the design process and prepare for the delivery of this project.

“Making changes to our Town is something that has to work for residents, businesses and visitors.”

A drop-in public engagement event was held at Millom Guide Hall on Wednesday, 6 March where illustrations showing revisions to the scheme were available to view.

The engagement material is now available to view on our website. This also includes a link to the online survey. The deadline for responses is Wednesday 20 March 2024.

Once completed, the Connecting Millom and Haverigg project will make it easier and safer for people to move around Millom and Haverigg on foot, by bicycle and by incorporating the needs of those with limited mobility.

Elements of the scheme which received design refinements are:

1. Cambridge Street / Station Road Junction in Millom (Section 1: Aggie’s Lonnin to St George’s Road)
2. Millom Town Square (Section 2: St George’s Road/Station Road Junction to Mainsgate Road)
3. Mainsgate Road/Devonshire Road Junction (Section 2: St George’s Road / Station Road Junction to Mainsgate Road)
4. The Front, Haverigg (Section 5: Main Street Haverigg to Iron Line)
5. Poolside Junction in Haverigg (Section 6: Poolside to A5093 via Moor Road).

The council’s technical specialists, WSP UK Ltd and Open Architecture, will now create detailed plans as part of the next stage in the process.
