Residents in Barrow are advised to be wary of people offering gardening services following reports of scammers in the Holbeck area.
People are encouraged to remain vigilant. If someone offers a service unexpectedly it may be a cause for concern.
It is always best to use reputable companies when having work done. Residents are advised to speak to their elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours to make them aware of these types of scams.
Remember:
- Scammers can be convincing and can trick you into paying for work which is often overpriced, of poor quality, or not even carried out.
- Take time to consider your options. If you feel pressured into making quick decisions about work which isn’t necessary, say no and walk away or close the door.
- Never send money to anyone you don’t know or trust.
- Never pay upfront for good or services you have not received.
- Enquire whether they are from a legitimate company – legitimate trades people will not approach you in the street or call door-to-door.
- Don’t be embarrassed about reporting a scam. Scammers are cunning and clever and there’s no shame in being deceived. By reporting it, you’ll make it more difficult for them to deceive others.
If you think you have seen anything suspicious or have been scammed, report it via 101.
