Barrow man jailed for sex offences

A man has been sentenced to one year six months for online child sex offences at Preston Crown Court on Friday 12th August.

Darren Rybak, 50, of Nelson Street, Barrow was jailed in connection with attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

Rybak was also given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years.

Rybak was arrested on 13th April 2022 at Barrow Train Station after officers were contacted by an online child sexual exploitation group reporting Rybak had arrange to meet a girl there which was actually a decoy.

Following his arrest Rybak’s mobile phone was seized, officers carried out a section 18 search of his home address and seized further items.

T/Detective Constable Ashlynne Elliot said “Our main focus is to protect vulnerable people from harm.

“Today’s sentence puts another offender behind bars, I encourage anyone who has concerns that a child might be a victim of online child sexual exploitation or abuse to contact us.

“We are committed to protecting children from sexual abuse and online child sexual exploitation, with specialist officers from our Cyber and Digital Crime Unit, working together in partnership with support agencies across Cumbria to investigate and bring perpetrators of these horrific crimes before the courts.”

To report a crime, visit our website or call police on 101. Always dial 999 in an emergency.

Further information on the support available for victims of sexual abuse is available on the Constabulary’s website under the get advice section.

If you have been affected by rape or sexual assault, contact The Bridgeway Sexual Assault Support Service’s 24/7 free helpline on 0808 118 6432.

Cumbria Constabulary will act appropriately on any information which is reported. However, the Constabulary’s position on so-called paedophile hunter groups reflects the position of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, in that we understand the desire to protect children but any member of the public who has information about child sexual abuse, online or otherwise, should contact police so it can be investigated and bring offenders to justice.
