Arrests made in Barrow as part of crackdown on crime

Collaborative work between Barrow’s response officers and detectives has resulted in multiple offenders arrested and charged over the weekend (11-13 August 2023).

Stephen Callery, 50, of Roby Street, Merseyside, was arrested after a positive, proactive stop search by response officers on Friday 11 August. He has since been charged with possession with intent to supply crack cocaine and possession with intent to supply heroin. He is due to appear before Preston Crown Court on 11 September 2023.

These charges are in connection with Operation Rampart, an ongoing investigation into county lines drugs supply.

In a separate incident, two men were arrested and charged on 12 August, following a robbery which occurred in Barrow on 8 August.

Peter Penman, 32, of Dundonald Street, Barrow, and Gareth Fleming, 44 of Roose Road, Barrow were charged with robbery.

Chief Inspector Lee Skelton said: “We work all-year-round to tackle criminality in impacting our communities in Barrow.

“The work carried out over the weekend in Barrow has been successful one-team approach between both response officers and detectives, actively targeting suspects, coupled with some positive proactive stop search work.

“This proactive work sends out a clear message to those who think they are above the law.

“Our message to offenders in the area is that we will be swift in going after those who harm our communities by committing crime.”
