Allotment Soup Share – Soup and Sustainability

Barrow arts charity, Art Gene, is offering a pop-up soup and sustainability café, “Allotment Soup Share” on Wednesday 22nd February and Thursday 23rd February 2023, 1pm – 6pm. On the menu is delicious vegetarian soup, free of charge. The informal café is committed to supporting our environment and community, using locally sourced and sustainable ingredients and materials. It highlights the importance of local food production and putting an end to food waste.

Vegan soup, made by volunteers, including local Syrian chefs, was created using fresh vegetables grown at Art Gene’s Allotment Soup Isle of Walney Community Growing Space, donated free of charge. The project prioritises using eco-friendly materials and reducing waste.

From biodegradable takeaway containers to composting food scraps, the soup and the pop-up café aim to promote positive impacts on the environment, as well as bringing a bit of winter week-day warmth.

You can take away frozen soup portions to eat at home, and samples of chutney from our recent “Waste to Taste” chutney making workshops. There will be the opportunity to find about the benefits of growing your own organic food, and how you can become involved in Allotment Soup, The Isle of Walney Community Growing Space, alongside informal conversations on how we can reduce our carbon footprint and save money during the cost of living crisis. There will also be information on practical ways to lower our energy bills and how solar energy can benefit our lives.

Maddi Nicholson, Art Gene’s director, says “Allotment Soup Share brings together our amazing volunteers and the community to share positive ideas about how to eliminate food waste, grow you own organic food, save money and lower your carbon footprint, as well as eating delicious healthy soup together. What more could you want on a cold half term in February!”

The events are free, and all are welcome.
