Folk rock icons Lindisfarne to play Barrow-in-Furness this September

Folk rock legends Lindisfarne’s 2023 UK tour continues with a performance this September at The Forum, Barrow-in-Furness.

It was Lindisfarne’s album ‘Fog on The Tyne’ that gave them their breakthrough in the UK.

Topping the album charts early in 1972 for four weeks, the release remained on-chart for 56 weeks in total while “Meet Me on the Corner”, one of two songs written by bassist Clements, reached No. 1 as a single.

Their roots in the North-East England of 1968, Lindisfarne blended the mercurial songwriting talent of singer/guitarist the late Alan Hull with ‘sweet and sour’ harmonies, proud references to their homeland and a boozy, uplifting acoustic-rock swagger that won over the masses in

Britain in the early 70s. Over fifty years on and it’s been going well, still.

“We’re so pleased with the response we’ve been getting,” says Rod.

“Everybody loves an evening out enjoying live music and we are very grateful for the strong demand to see us!”

Rod cites an extensive back catalogue as a factor in fans returning again and again to gigs.

“We have a lot of songs,” he says, “and we make a point of rejuvenating our set list regularly which means dusting down old numbers and bringing them back to life and that’s a pleasure for us too.

“Of course,” he adds, “the hits will always be a major feature of a Lindisfarne concert, so Meet Me on The Corner, Run For Home, Fog on The Tyne and other evergreens will never go away.”

Lindisfarne is being celebrated with the release of Radio Times – Live At The BBC 1971-1990, the definitive take on the band’s time at the Corporation offering up over eight hours of recordings over eight discs.

With an authoritative booklet essay by music writer Chris Charlesworth, ‘Radio Times – Live At The BBC’ is a lavishly packaged set featuring 131 audio tracks, of which over 60 are previously unreleased, all fully approved by the original Lindisfarne band members and their estates.

ABOUT LINDISFARNE

“Meet Me On The Corner”, “Lady Eleanor”, “Run For Home” and “Fog On The Tyne” are all songs that continue to resonate down the years and in the process have slipped into the very fabric of British culture.

In 2023, Lindisfarne continue entertaining crowds with an extensive repertoire of world-renowned songs delivered in the inimitably engaging way that has trademarked the band’s stage act right back to 1970.

That’s when band writers the late Alan Hull and Rod Clements emerged from Tyneside to quickly carve out a unique place for themselves fronting one of British rock’s most original bands.

Their pioneering sound, combining acoustic instruments like mandolin and fiddle with their electric blues roots, proved the perfect medium for their catchy, memorable songs.

The Clements-penned hit “Meet Me On The Corner” paved the way for their classic ‘Fog On The Tyne’ release to become the UK’s top-selling album of 1972.

Further acclaimed albums were to follow, buoyed up by powerful live performances. An accessible, unpretentious style bestowed them with an enviable reputation as festival favourites, while the Lindisfarne annual Christmas concerts held in their native Newcastle became the stuff of legend.

Today’s Lindisfarne comprises a classic five-piece line up of long-time members fronted by original founder-member Rod Clements (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, slide guitar), Steve Daggett (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Paul Smith (drums), Ian Thomson (bass) and Alan Hull’s son-in-law Dave Hull-Denholm (vocals, guitars, piano).
