Empowering the next generation: Cumbria’s young people elect their Youth Parliament Members

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) Elections, held every two years, are just around the corner, and the anticipation is palpable as eleven impressive candidates from across Cumbria gear up to compete for two coveted spots in the UK Youth Parliament.

The UKYP provides a platform for young people aged 11-19 to voice their opinions on issues that affect them, and the eleven candidates from Cumbria are eager to represent the voices of their peers at the highest levels of government. With their passion, energy, and commitment, these young leaders are campaigning tirelessly, determined to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.

Once elected, the new Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) will meet with MPs and local councillors, organise events, run campaigns, make speeches, hold debates, and ensure the views of young people are heard by decision makers. The most important aspect of any MYP’s job is to represent the views of the young people in their constituency, and the candidates are fully prepared to take on this crucial responsibility

The successful candidates will take over from the three current Cumbrian MYP’s – Ben Perris (Carlisle & Eden), Aaron Kelly (Allerdale & Copeland) and Ellis Heywood (Barrow & South Lakeland).

The new model for the elections splits the geographical area by the new local authorities, Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council.Once voting has finished, votes will be counted, and the results will be announced for each area on Wednesday 22 February at Cumbria House in Carlisle for Cumberland, and Friday 24 February at Kendal County Hall for Westmorland and Furness.

Councillor Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services said:

“The UK Youth Parliament Elections offer a vital opportunity for young people to have their voices heard and to effect positive change.

“We’re thrilled to see so many exceptional candidates from Cumbria stepping up to the challenge and making their mark in the political arena and I have no doubt that whoever is elected as the MYP for Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council will do an excellent job representing the voices of their peers at the highest levels of government.”

Councillor Sue Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning said:

“Young people are the future leaders, and taking part in the UKYP election, either as a candidate or a voter, provides an exceptional opportunity to learn about democracy. Congratulations to all those who are participating, and good luck to each of the candidates as the election approaches!”
