FURNESS RAIDERS 46 HUDDERSFIELD NEW COLLEGE 16
Words: Leo Clarke
FURNESS Raiders knew they had been in a battle despite running in eight tries against Huddersfield New College in their College League clash last night.
Huddersfield showed plenty of courage and commitment, but Raiders – who lost forward Brad Williamson in the first half with a suspected broken ankle – were simply too strong in all departments.
The match saw Furness Raiders complete their home fixtures in the regular season but they still have to travel to Pontefract before heading into the play-offs after guaranteed a top six-finish.
Head coach Darren Carter was expecting more from his side and said after the win: “I thought the first half was probably not far off as poor as we had been, but that was down to a number of things. We have rotated the team massively all the time with players playing in different positions.
“It wasn’t lack of effort it was just a little bit of overplaying against them.
“I thought, again, they fixed it up at half time and came out a lot better, we stuck to basics and started pushing, and it improved. The lads ran away with the score in the end.”
He added: “The score was never in doubt, but sometimes you get a little disappointed in the performance. But saying that we have given loads of people game time so that’s the good thing that comes out of it.”
Half back Jake Carter, who went on to kick five conversions, scored an early opening touchdown, and when wingman Tyler Lancaster got the first of his two tries Raiders were suddenly 12-0 ahead at the JR Hornby Stadium.
Huddersfield briefly applied the brakes with a converted try before Ryan Johnston restored the advantage with a great solo effort, quickly gathering his breath to add the conversion.
However Huddersfield refused to lie down and after a second converted try it was suddenly game on.
That was the wake-up call Raiders needed and further tries from Tyler Batty and Aiden Wright saw their side go into the break leading 24-16.
Raiders went over the whitewash another three times through Ethan Furness, Declan Rodgers and Lancaster in the second to seal the victory.
Barrow Raiders host Coventry Bears at Craven Park this Sunday for their fourth pre-season friendly (kick-off 3pm).
